Sources
Cholecalciferol is synthesized in the skin from sunlight exposure. It can also be obtained from animal-based foods like fatty fish and egg yolks, and is available in dietary supplements.
Function
Cholecalciferol is converted in the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D and then in the kidneys to its active form, calcitriol (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D). Calcitriol aids in calcium and phosphorus absorption, maintains bone mineralization, and supports the immune system.
Medical uses
